Sicily 2013: Vulcano

Nel pomeriggio abbiamo visitato l'isola di Vulcano, isola con un'altissima concentrazione di zolfo nel terreno (come si può vedere dalle foto in cui la roccia è gialla) e ciò ne causa un fortissimo odore tipico di questo minerale, talmente forte che si poteva già sentire dalla motonave mentre ci dirigevamo verso il porto. Inoltre, essendo per l'appunto un vulcano, su tutta l'isola la temperatura è di qualche grado più alta rispetto alle altre 6 e la differenza rimane costante tutto l'anno. Tipiche di questa isola sono i fanghi termali (nei quali se ci si immerge si puzza di zolfo per più di una settimana) e le bellissime spiagge nere (di natura vulcanica). Oltre a tutta questa bellezza geologica, anche il mare non è da meno: l'acqua è caldissima e cristallina e rimanere immersi per delle ore è inevitabile!

In the afternoon we visited the island of Vulcano with a high concentration of sulfur in the soil (as you can see from the pictures where the rock is yellow) and this will cause an overwhelming smell typical of this mineral, so strong that it could be already feel from the boats as we headed towards the harbor. Also, being precisely on a volcano, the Island's temperature is a few degrees higher than the other 6 islands and the difference is will constant throughout the year. Typical of this island are the mud (where if you dive you stink of sulfur for more than a week) and the beautiful black sand beaches (of volcanic origin). In addition to all this natural geology beauty, the sea is not far behind: the water is crystal clear and very warm and be immersed for hours is inevitable!

Sicily 2013: Lipari

Durante la prima settimana di vacanza siamo andati in gita alle isole Eolie e delle 7 abbiamo visitato Lipari e Vulcano. In questo post vi mostro la mattinata a Lipari, l'isola più grande e popolata delle 7 sorelle, dove abbiamo visitato tutto il centro e la cattedrale principale. Passando tra le mura si possono vedere i segni tangibili di tutte le dominazioni (circa 12 diverse, tra cui greci e arabi), avvenute nel corso dei secoli, che ogni volta hanno distrutto e ricostruito la città.

During the first week of vacation we went on a field trip to the Aeolian Islands and we visited 2 of the 7 islands: Lipari and Vulcano. In this post I show you the morning spent on Lipari, the largest and most populated of the 7 sisters, where we visited the center and the main cathedral. Passing through the city walls you can see the tangible signs of all dominations (about 12 different, including Greek and Arabic), that took place over the centuries, in which every time they destroyed and rebuilt the city.
